Evaluating Your Heating Needs When You Have An Old Furnace

Table of Contents

Is it time to really start to think about the condition of your home heating system? When you have an old furnace (15+ years), you should have a good understanding of your options for furnace repairreplacement, or routine maintenance of that system, depending on how it performs in those first weeks of the season.

There are some telltale signs that you should not ignore if you want to prevent an untimely furnace breakdown. Watch our video and read on below to learn more.

Operational Concerns

You’ve made it to November without turning on your furnace; while you may feel accomplished, you may only now be finding out that your heating system isn’t firing up consistently, or worse, won’t turn on at all. Schedule a service call immediately to repair the system, or if the system is more than 15-20 years old, consider furnace replacement as your most cost-effective option.

Uncomfortable Home

Your furnace may be turning on and you may feel warm air coming out of your vents, but yet your home is still not comfortable. If you are experiencing hot and cold spots throughout your home or your furnace isn’t able to keep up with your thermostat setting, there could be a deeper issue lurking.

Unfamiliar Smells & Sounds

Turn the heating system on only to hear a slew of unfamiliar ‘bang‘ and ‘pop’ sounds? This could be a telltale sign that something in the system is malfunctioning. While a burning smell can be expected for the first couple of run cycles (as it burns off dust that has settled), if you experience it frequently, it’s definitely worth a look.

High Utility Bills

Have you seen your utility bills skyrocket since turning your HVAC system over to ‘heating’ mode? While you should expect a slight increase, the usage in these mild fall/winter temperatures shouldn’t be enough to warrant sticker shock. A utility bill that is not on par with past years usage could indicate an operational issue that you aren’t able to hear, see, or feel.

Regardless of the age of your furnace, you’ll want to make sure you take the proper safety precautions going into heating season. Make sure that you have working carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home. This will alert your family immediately if there is a CO leak as a result of a faulty furnace.
