What Does an HVAC Installer Do?

An HVAC installer sets up heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems according to manufacturer requirements. At Logan A/C & Heat Services, you will only be responsible for residential retrofit replacements - no commercial or industrial jobs or new construction installations.

You will work with a variety of HVAC systems, including:

  • Central air conditioners
  • Furnaces
  • Air handlers
  • Heat pumps
  • Ductless systems
  • Clean air products
  • Trane Home automation systems

HVAC Installer Job Requirements

Installers need specialized training to provide professional installations. Logan requires EPA certification and a minimum of 2-5 years of experience as a lead installer in residential retrofitting. Applicants must be able to pass a background check and drug test, have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license, and demonstrate excellent communication skills. You should be comfortable interacting with and assisting customers.

Although not required, NATE® and HVAC certifications are a preferred plus.  Our leadership team will help you achieve these certifications through our continuous employee training programs offered through during the time of your career at Logan Services.

We will provide you with a uniform, but you’ll need your own tools. We can help you retrieve the right tools if necessary.

All HVAC equipment and parts are stocked in our warehouse, so you should have access to everything you need. You won’t need to take trips to the supply house. We also have a world-class logistics team that structures every work day for maximum efficiency.

What Qualities Do HVAC Installers Need?

HVAC installation is a highly technical process that requires accuracy, attention to detail, and an in-depth knowledge of mechanical systems. Installers must adhere to manufacturer guidelines and company procedures. A professional and efficient installer exhibits:

  • Troubleshooting skills
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Patience and safe work practices
  • Customer service skills

Logan installers in particular are friendly, driven, and take pride in their work. They communicate effectively with customers and are committed to providing quality service. We look for hardworking, talented, and innovative individuals seeking a long-term career.

HVAC Installer Training and Education

HVAC installation professionals must undergo an apprenticeship or training program at a trade school, community college, or with Logan A/C & Heat Services. These programs last anywhere from six months to two years. Even if you’re on track to be an installer, most programs teach all the basics of HVAC. This includes the responsibilities of a service tech, such as HVAC maintenance and repair.

Each state has its own licensing and certification requirements. For example, Ohio does not mandate HVAC licensing to complete residential work at the technician level. You are, however, required to earn EPA certification. HVAC technicians and installers must pass the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Section 608 certification program to handle refrigerants.

North American Technician Excellence® (NATE) is a nonprofit organization that certifies technicians based on knowledge and experience. NATE certification is not a requirement for HVAC installation, but it demonstrates your status as a reliable, skilled, and professional installer. To maintain your certification, you must undergo follow-up training and testing every two years.
