7 Common Home Heating Myths Debunked

While there are many tips about system care and maintenance out there that are helpful, some of the advice might actually be a common myth.

Here are seven home heating myths we’d like to debunk!

Closing Vents In Unused Rooms

MYTH #1 – I’ll save money by closing vents in unused rooms.

Not necessarily! You may do more harm than good! Your heating system is sized to condition the air in all of the rooms of your home. By closing off vents, you could be causing additional pressure to build up within your system. This could very well result in leaks in your system, which will end up wasting your energy and money.

Our Expert Advice On Closing Vents:

Keep your vents OPEN to allow your system to evenly heat your home and not add additional strain on the equipment.

Drastically Adjusting The Thermostat

MYTH #2 – I should turn my furnace off when I leave home to save money.

Experts would say otherwise! While you may have heard conflicting advice on whether or not to turn your heating system off while you are away for an extended period of time, most experts will tell you to keep that system ON. The money you save will be minimal compared to the strain you will put on your system when it is turned back on to reach the desired temperature again.

Our Expert Advice On Thermostat Adjustments:

When you are away, set the thermostat to a temperature no more than 3-5 degrees lower than usual. If you have a programmable thermostat, you could schedule to resume normal heating before you arrive home.

Use Space Heaters For Hot & Cold Spots

MYTH #3 – Using space heaters is the most effective solution to cold spots in my home.

Use with caution; space heaters should be a short term solution ONLY! Your HVAC system is designed to heat all of your home. If you are experiencing one or more uncomfortable rooms, rather than using space heaters, you should find out why your system isn’t effectively heating your living space. Depending on the type of space heater you have, you could be operating a device that is hazardous to your home and costing you money.

Our Expert Advice On Tackling Hot & Cold Spots:

If you are experiencing uneven temperatures in your home, consider the last time you had a furnace tune-up or duct cleaning. If your system is clean, tuned-up, and sized properly, consider the benefits of a ductless heating system.

Furnace Maintenance Is Unnecessary

MYTH #4 – If my furnace is working, I don’t need a heating system tune-up.

Not true! Many furnace malfunctions occur due to the lack of routine maintenance! Because furnaces are complex systems, it’s best to have an HVAC professional provide seasonal maintenance and care. This can not only help to increase the efficiency of your system, but also prevent future breakdowns and problems with your system for years to come.

Never Replace A Furnace Before It’s Broken

MYTH #5 – I should wait until my furnace breaks down before I consider replacing it.

Wrong! It’s often more cost-effective to proactively replace your furnace before an untimely breakdown! By preparing for a system replacement ahead of time, you can help avoid an emergency situation in the dead of winter. In many cases, you are able to recoup the cost of a new heating system in a handful of years with the energy savings you receive with higher-efficiency system operation. Get better comfort and energy-friendly usage by being proactive about replacement.

Our Expert Advice On Proactive Replacement:

If your furnace is approaching 15 years or older and is starting to nickel and dime you with issues, repairs, and high utility bills, it’s wise to prepare for replacement. Request a FREE estimate now »

A Bigger Furnace Is Better

MYTH #6 – The bigger the furnace, the more effective it will be at heating my home.

Not true; an oversized system may cost you in the long run! The size of your heating unit should depend on many factors, including the size of your home, the layout, and the quality and design of the ductwork. While bigger may seem ‘better’, an oversized system will likely short-cycle from frequent transitions between on and off modes, resulting in constant wear and tear or even a system breakdown.

Our Expert Advice On System Sizing:

When buying a new furnace, air handler, and/or heat pump, confirm that your contractor has properly sized the system for your specific home.

HVAC Brand Is Most Important Factor To Consider

MYTH #7 – When it’s time to replace, the furnace BRAND is the most important decision.

Not quite! The quality of the install itself is as much or more important than the equipment you select! While we understand the importance of a good, quality brand furnace, the biggest decision you will make when replacing your HVAC system is WHO you choose to install it. When you are getting estimates, be sure to compare not only the price you are quoted but also the quality of the company. Even the best furnaces will do a poor job of keeping your home warm and living up to its high-efficiency rating if improperly installed.

Our Expert Advice On How To Choose An HVAC Installer:

Do your research! Ask your friends and read online reviews about the company you are considering using for this project. Don’t sacrifice quality when it comes to the system installation.
