Spring Home Energy Audit Checklist

Table of Contents

It’s the first day of Spring! While the current forecast would suggest otherwise, our calendar tells us that spring has arrived, and we’ll soon be seeing the shift to warmer temperatures.

Make sure you are ready! Even though the weather is still in winter-mode outside, that doesn’t mean that you can’t start preparing for an energy-efficient spring inside. Conducting your own home energy audit can help you find ways to cut cooling costs and lower your energy bills this cooling season!

Start your spring home energy audit with these 3 tips:

1) Detect and Seal Air Leaks
Look for places in your home that have potential gaps or cracks that can allow airflow to go in and out. Some of these may include baseboards, electrical outlets, and window frames. One these problem areas are located, seal them with with caulk, weather stripping, etc.

2) Check Your Home’s Insulation
If your home is older or has insulation levels that are less than today’s recommended minimum, you could be losing conditioned air through the attic, ceiling and walls at a relatively rapid pace. To prevent this loss of conditioned air, you’ll need to check the insulation in your attic and walls.

3) Inspect Your HVAC Equipment
Checking your air filter and changing it out routinely is the most important maintenance task you can do for your HVAC system. Dirty filters will restrict air flow, making your system work harder than it should. You should also check your outdoor unit to make sure it is clear of debris.
