Things To Consider For Your Furnace Room When Finishing Your Basement

Table of Contents

With spring in full force, you may have a list of home projects to get done. One of those projects may include finishing your basement. Did you know that there are tips to consider when it comes to constructing your furnace room?

Many furnaces are located in the basement of a home. When it comes time to finish out the living space of your basement, you’ll have several options for how the space will lay out. Don’t let the functionality of an appropriately sized and utilized furnace room to be an oversight.

Consider these tips BEFORE you start the project…

Furnace Dimensions, Requirements, and Access

When finishing your basement and putting a room around your furnace, you will want to follow regulated dimensions. You will need 24″ minimum in front of the furnace to be able to have it serviced. It does help to have 6″ – 12″ extra to make it easier for someone to come into service/maintain it. Pay close attention to different parts of your furnace like the filter access, the UV light, and the humidifier; these all need regular maintenance, and you don’t want to block off access to them.

Furnace Surrounding Wall

Newer furnaces tend to be on the wider side, and the ductwork also tends to be bigger due to higher efficiency standards. We suggest giving some extra space around the furnace from the wall; your furnace many be fine now, but in the future, if a furnace replacement is needed, you have plenty of room for a new heating system

Ceiling Above The Furnace

Should you use a drop ceiling or drywall ceiling in your basement? When replacing the indoor HVAC system, new piping needs to be run from the basement (furnace area) to the outside of the home. If you have the height available in your basement, then a drop ceiling makes things exceedingly easier for us to replace that piping. Also, having access to dampers makes it possible to adjust airflow and temperatures during different seasons; adjusting dampers is more effective than closing the registers. Unfortunately, if drywall is covering those dampers, you won’t be able to modify them.

Furnace Room Safety Tips

The furnace room will both hide the furnace so you can enjoy your basement area more and provide a safe space for your furnace to run adequately. Some safety tips you can follow for your furnace room include:

  • Keep the area well lit.
  • Keep space clean and free of dust and debris.
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector in the furnace room to alert you to any possible leaks.
  • Store extra furnace filters (standard or PAP) in the area, so they are readily available.
