How To Change Your Furnace Filter

Table of Contents

Changing your furnace filter is one of the easiest ways to maximize the efficiency of your heating and cooling system.

Basic furnace filters are designed to trap dustdirt, and airborne particles before they can get into the system and damage the fan or the heating coil. More advanced filters can also enhance the air quality in your home by trapping bacteriapollen, and mildew and mold spores. Since most of the air in your house circulates through your HVAC system, furnace filters are your first line of defense against dust and airborne allergens.

It is recommended that you change your furnace filter monthlyNot familiar with the process? Check out these 4 steps:

Check the Unit’s Filter

It’s important to check the size and type of filter for your furnace to make sure you are using the correct one. The filter is normally located between the return air and blower.

Remove the Old Filter

Shut off the power at the electrical switch mounted on or near the furnace. Open the filter access panel and remove the old filter. Note the directional arrow on the filter — all are made to filter the air in one direction.

Install the New Filter

Insert the new furnace filter, making sure the arrows are facing the same way as on the old filter.

Replace the Access Panel

Close the vent cover and any clips used to hold the filter in place. Flip the electrical switch to turn the power back on.
