Home Safety Tips For Your Holiday Hosting

Table of Contents

With the holiday season coming upon us, you may be gearing up to host your annual family gathering. It’s likely that the decor and dinner menu are on the top of your mind, but don’t forget to think about the safety and comfort of your guests!

Here are a few things to remember when it comes to your home safety this holiday season:

Check Your CO and Smoke Detectors

Test the batteries in your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. The extra heating and cooking going on in your home during the holidays allows for a greater chance for appliance-related incidents. Ensure the safety of your family and friends by having fully-operational detectors.

Make Your Kitchen A Safe Environment

The kitchen is the most popular spot in the home during any holiday party, and you’ll want to make sure you are mindful of all of the additional electronics/appliances that are plugged in. Go ahead and unplug and store away all current kitchen items that will go unused during your gathering. Space out those crockpots and electric skillets so that they are not all plugged into a single power strip. By doing so, you’ll prevent flipping a breaker and ensure a safe kitchen environment.

Keep Furniture Away From Vents

When you are planning for any number of guests to dine with you, it’s likely you’ll be making room to set up additional tables and seating. Be mindful of any furniture that you move to accommodate; you’ll want to be sure that you aren’t blocking any HVAC registers, as this could lead to blocked air flow and uncomfortable temperatures in the home.

Kid-Proof Your Home

Expecting guests with children? Consider some of the items that may be breakable or dangerous to the littlest members of the family; store them away during your gathering to ensure the item’s safety, as well as the safety of any kids attending your party.

Get Your Furnace Ready

Hopefully you have either already had a seasonal tune-up on your furnace, or you have planned to have a professional out at some point in the next couple of months. Now you can do your part to ensure that your furnace is operating with a clean furnace filter. By neglecting to do so, you could risk having an HVAC break down while hosting your friends and family this year.
