Basic Furnace Start Up Tips For Fall

Table of Contents

We are still experiencing hot weather, but fall is fast approaching with cooler temperatures. This change in weather will mean that we will be turning off the A/C and turning on the furnace to keep us warm and cozy inside our homes.

Turning on your furnace after a long summer of hot weather can be a nerve-wracking experience. What possible problems could lie underneath the surface?

If you’ve kept up on your seasonal HVAC maintenance, there’s a good chance you shouldn’t be greeted with any surprises with your furnace operation; however, if an issue does occur upon start-up, it’s better to learn sooner than later.

Follow these basic tips below to make sure your furnace is in proper working condition for the upcoming fall and winter weather.

Change your HVAC System Filter

Furnace filters are an important part of your HVAC system functionfurnace filters will help to keep your heating and cooling system running efficiently for optimal home comfort. Changing the furnace filter every 30 days (or for PAP filters, every 3 months) will help improve your indoor air quality as well. Let the team at Logan Services know if we can help keep you stocked up on furnace filter replacements.

Turn Your Furnace On Now

Turning the furnace on while we are still experiencing mild weather may seem counterproductive, but it can help you in the long run. By doing so, you can see if there are any problems before the heating season comes in full force. Set the system to ‘heat mode’ and pay attention to any operational concerns that should be looked into prior to the heating season.

Listen For Noises

When your furnace is turned on, listen for the normal sounds, like the heating and cooling system kicking on, the clicking of the HVAC thermostat, the whining of the inducer motor, and the thunder sound of fuel igniting in the heat exchanger. Pay close attention if there is an unfamiliar noise that sounds alarming; if you have any concerns, call Logan Services for service on your HVAC system.

Observe Smells

When the furnace is turned on, you may notice a faint, burning smell; this is normal. It’s common for a layer of dust to form on the heat exchanger during the cooling season. The smell comes from the dust burning off and should resolve itself after a couple of uses. If the smell continues as a result of running your furnace, you may want to call Logan Services for help.

Keep these basic maintenance tips in mind when you turn on your furnace for the first time. Pay close attention, and if you feel that your furnace isn’t working correctly, contact Logan Services for service so we can keep you comfortable in DaytonColumbus and Cincinnati.
