Getting the Most for Your Money

Getting the Most for Your Money

-by Doug Vanderpool

So we've made it to Fall, but I've got to level with you. It's been a tough year. I don't think I have to tell you about all of the trials we've faced through this recession because you've lived through them. Hard times bring powerful lessons. One of the lessons I think many Americans have learned is how to save money, and how to watch their spending. I've thought about that, and I want to help you apply that “life lesson” to your home's heating and air conditioning. Here are a few things I know will help you make solid investments and bring the best value to your home, your health, and your comfort.

-There's FREE money out there — Take advantage of it!

Right now, as part of the economic stimulus legislation, the federal government is offering a tax credit up to $1500 on the purchase of new, highly efficient air conditioners, heat pumps and furnaces. This is three times more than the tax credit available two years ago, and it is being offered to you now. This is better than a tax deduction because it actually reduces the amount of tax you must pay. To find out how you could qualify for this tax credit, call or email me. I'd be happy to come out and take a look at how your system could be updated.

Trane is also offering some hefty deals right now. If you replace your heating and air conditioning system by October 31, 2009 you could qualify for a cash rebate up to $1000. If financing is what interests you, Trane has some great offers you can take advantage of including no payments untill 2011.

-Fossil fuels and high utility bills are dinosaurs!

Energy costs are so unpredictable. One minute natural gas, oil, and propane prices are soaring, the next minute prices fall sharply. Have you had enough of this rollercoaster ride, yet? A “dual fuel” or hybrid heat system can give you the capability to choose and control how you would like to heat your home. The hybrid heat system includes a heat pump combined with a gas, oil or propane forced air furnace. Throughout most of the winter months it may be more efficient to heat your home using your electric heat pump. During extreme cold weather your forced air furnace will supplement the heat pump to provide continuous comfort control. You get to choose the temperature of when you want your forced air furnace to take over for your heat pump. Your utility bills will stay low by using minimal fossil fuels for heating.

-Make sure you get what you pay for.

Here's a message from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: “Improperly installed or maintained central forced-air systems can be up to 50% less efficient than their rated efficiency.” In fact, the EPA estimates that “more than half of all systems in U.S. homes do not perform to their rated efficiency as a result of improper installation.” Don't become a victim. Have someone you trust install your new Trane system and get the value you paid for. And please, keep that new system operating at it's maximum efficiency by regularly getting it tuned up. A quick tune-up will certainly help your system perform at it's best efficiency level and help lengthen the equipment's life-span.
